Originally built and placed in service as Floating Workshop YR 36, the barge was later redesignated YRB 31. In March/April 2002, it was converted to a repair, berthing and messing barge at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii and was reclassified YRBM 54. Today, YRBM 54 is one of the Navy's non self-propelled Repair, Berthing and Messing Barges.
