USS Pogy (SSN 647)

- decommissioned -

One of the STURGEON - class fast attack submarines, the USS POGY was the second ship in the Navy to bear the name. Laid down on May 5, 1964, by the New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; the POGY was launched June 3, 1967, and sponsored by Mrs. George Wales. The contract for the construction of POGY was canceled on June 5, 1967, and the submarine was towed to Philadelphia for temporary berthing. The contract for the construction of POGY was reassigned to Ingalls Shipbuilding Corp., Pascagoula, Miss., on December 7, 1967, and the uncompleted submarine was towed to that yard on January 8, 1968, for completion. After 28 years of service, the submarine was both decommissioned and stricken from the Navy list on June 11, 1999, and entered the Navy's Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash. On April 12, 2000, recycling was finished.
