USS EUGENE A. GREENE was the second GEARING - class destroyer and the first ship in the Navy to bear the name. Originally, the name Eugene A. Greene was assigned to DE 549 on 28 October 1943. However, when the construction of DE 549 was canceled on June 10, 1944, the name was reassigned to DD 711 on July 10, 1944.

From April-December 1952, the EUGENE A. GREENE was converted to a radar picket destroyer and was reclassified DDR 711. This designation was reverted to DD 711 on March 15, 1963. Decommissioned on August 31, 1972, the EUGENE A. GREENE was subsequently loaned to Spain where she was recommissioned as CHURRUCA (D 61). Purchased by Spain on May 17, 1978, the ship continued to serve into the late 1980s. On December 12, 1991, the destroyer was sunk as a target by the Spanish Navy.

About the Ship's Name:

Eugene A. Greene, born 21 November 1921 in Smithtown, L.I., N.Y., enlisted in the Naval Reserve 13 January 1941, and after aviation training, was commissioned ensign 30 August 1941. Serving in Bombing Squadron 6 in ENTERPRISE (CV 6), he was killed in action 4 June 1942 in the Battle of Midway. He distinguished himself in breaking through heavy Japanese fighter and antiaircraft opposition to dive bomb a Japanese carrier, and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his selfless heroism. The name Eugene A. Greene was assigned to DE 549 on 28 October 1943, canceled on 10 June 1944, and reassigned to DD 711 on 10 July 1944.
