USS PETREL was the seventh CHANTICLEER - class Submarine Rescue Ship and the fifth ship in the Navy to bear the name. Decommissioned on September 30, 1991, after almost exactly 45 years of service, the PETREL was stricken from the Navy list on October 9, 1991, and is now berthed at the National Defense Reserve Fleet, James River, Fort Eustis, Va., awaiting final disposal.
