The photos below were taken by me and show the GENERAL JOHN POPE laid-up at Suisun Bay, Calif., on March 27, 2010. Built in 1943 and commissioned as USS GENERAL JOHN POPE (AP 110), the ship was decommissioned in 1946 and turned over to the US Army. Given back to the Navy in 1950, the ship was assigned to the Military Sea Transportation Service and placed in service as USNS GENERAL JOHN POPE (T-AP 110) for operations in the Korean War. After the war, the ship was placed out of service. On August 17, 1965, the GENERAL JOHN POPE was reactivated again for service in the Vietnam War participating in the transfer of the 9th Army Division to Vietnam. Once again placed out of service in May 1970, the ship was towed back to Suisun Bay for lay up where she remained for the next years. On May 21, 2010, the GENERAL JOHN POPE left Suisun Bay under tow to ESCO Marine, Brownsville, Tx., for scrapping.
