USS NEWPORT was the lead ship of the NEWPORT - class of Tank Landing Ships and the fourth ship in the Navy to bear the name. Decommissioned on October 1, 1992, the USS NEWPORT was transfered to the Mexican Navy on May 23, 2001. There, the ship was recommissioned as RIO PAPALOAPAN and the US Navy struck the NEWPORT from the Navy list on July 13, 2001.
