The task of the Attack / Amphibious Cargo Ships was to carry troops, heavy equipment and supplies in support of amphibious assaults and to bring them ashore with the landing craft carried on board. On January 1, 1969, all Attack Cargo Ships (AKA) were redesignated Amphibious Cargo Ships (LKA).
