Expeditionary Transfer Docks - ESD

Expeditionary Transfer Docks - initially designated as Mobile Landing Platform Ships - are designed to provide the Navy with a logistics platform thus improving the Navy's ability to transport cargo and equipment from sea to shore whenever the required shore facilities are missing or are not available. These ships feature float-on/ float-off technology and a reconfigurable mission deck to maximize capability. The ship in its basic form possesses add-on modules that support a vehicle staging area, vehicle transfer ramp, large mooring fenders and up to three LCAC vessel lanes to support its core requirements. The Expeditionary Transfer Docks are operated by Military Sealift Command personnel.
