Newport News, VA, Aug. 19, 1997 -- 90,000 tons of diplomacy. Precommissioning Unit HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75) is positioned facing the James River to conduct catapult "dead load" testing. The tests involved launching specially-designed vehicles weighing 15,000 to 90,000 pounds from each catapult. Once a fully operational flight deck is established, all four catapults will be able to safely launch 40 jets in one hour.
