Built in 1971 as SS LASH ESPANIA and operated by Prudential Line, the ship was later renamed SS AUSTRAL LIGHTNING before being reacquired by MARAD in May 1985. Subsequently assigned to the Ready Reserve Fleet, the CAPE FEAR was reassigned to the National Defense Reserve Fleet in July 2006 and is since then laid-up at Suisun Bay, Calif., as part of the National Defense Reserve Fleet.
