National Defense Reserve Fleet ("Mothball Fleet") Suisun Bay, Benicia, CA.

Cape Girardeau (T-AK 2039)

The photos below were taken by me and show the CAPE GIRARDEAU laid-up at Suisun Bay, Calif., on March 27, 2010. Delivered to the Maritime Administration (MARAD) in October 1968, the ship entered service with American Mail Lines as SS ALASKAN MAIL. Renamed SS PRESIDENT ADAMS on April 11, 1978, the ship continued civilian service until April 1988, when it was reaquired by MARAD. Renamed SS CAPE GIRARDEAU (T-AK 2039), the ship was subsequently berthed at Alameda, Calif., as part of the Military Sealift Command's Ready Reserve Force. In this role, the CAPE GIRARDEAU participated in Operation Desert Storm and from time to time joined naval exercises like RIMPAC 2004. Later withdrawn from the Ready Reserve Force, the ship was reassigned to the National Defense Reserve Fleet and is presently laid-up at Suisun Bay, Calif.
