USS MONITICELLO was the eighth and final THOMASTON - class dock landing ship and the third ship in the Navy named after the home of President Thomas Jefferson near Charlottesville Va., noted as a landmark in American domestic architecture, and designed by Jefferson himself. Decommissioned on September 30, 1985, and stricken from the Navy list on February 24, 1992, the MONTICELLO was subsequently laid up at the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, Benicia, Calif. The MONTICELLO was sunk as a target during exercise RIMPAC 2010 off the coast of Kauai, Hi., on July 14, 2010.

The photos below are an official US Navy photos taken on July 14, 2010. They show the HMCS ALGONQUIN (DDG 283) firing at the MONTICELLO during RIMPAC 2010 as well as the MONTICELLO after being hit by two Harpoon missiles. The MONTICELLO sunk later that day.
