USNS MONTFORD POINT is the lead ship of the MONTFORD POINT - class of Expeditionary Transfer Docks. Initially designated as Mobile Landing Platform Ships (MLP), US Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus officially announced the creation of a new ship designation effective September 4, 2015, and the MONTFORD POINT changed her designation from MLP 1 (for some reason the ship did not carry the "T-" prefix in its designation that typically identifies civilian-manned navy ships) to T-ESD 1.
The ship honors the approximately 20,000 African American Marine Corps recruits who trained at the North Carolina facility from 1942-1949. The MONTFORD POINT is manned by Military Sealift Command personnel and is assigned to a Maritime Prepositioning Ship Squadron.
