SS Cape Ann (T-AK 5009)

Delivered in 1962 as SS AFRICAN MERCURY the ship served as civilian cargo ship until transferred to MARAD for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, James River Group, Fort Eustis, Va., in March 1980. Renamed SS MERCURY and thereafter SS CAPE ANN (T-AK 5009), the ship was subsequently assigned to MARAD's Ready Reserve Force and was kept in a reduced operating status able to be activated within 10 days. On December 19, 2002, the CAPE ANN was reassigned to the National Defense Reserve Fleet again and is presently still laid up on the James River in Virginia.
